Processed Foods and Low Enzyme Levels are Key Factors Causing
Americans To Experience One of the Worst Health Pictures In the World
by Wayne Stewart, Nutritional Journalist and Former Director of Medical Projects, People to People, International
According to the World Health Organization Americans are among some of the
most unhealthy people in the world. And even worse, the general public in
the United States seems to be unaware of that fact.
Simply stated Americans in all age brackets are experiencing one of the
worst epidemics of chronic, degenerative disease that mankind has ever
known in spite of the tremendous breakthroughs in health science since the
early 1900's.
Even though the United States has one of the most technically sophisticated
and costly health care systems, many poor countries whose people barely get
enough to eat or adequate health care are considerably more healthy.
Perhaps, a person in your family is experiencing some of the following
symptoms: low energy levels, high blood pressure, frequent colds, flu and
allergies, sore joints, indigestion, inability to focus and concentrate,
loss of sex drive, feelings of stress or Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD).
If so these health conditions are early warning signs of more serious
degenerative diseases to come like cancer, heart disease, diabetes and
arthritis.
Why then are we one of the sickest nations in the world? If you don't have
any idea what is behind this phenomenon, you are not alone. Would you
believe that our food supply is literally killing us? C. Everett Koop, the
former U.S. Surgeon General, stated that 68% of all degenerative health
conditions are nutritionally based. In fact a very high percentage of the
American population today, has already developed sufficient nutritional
deficits that will cause them needless suffering, thereby reducing their
quality of life.
So, where is the evidence that our food supply is behind this phenomenon?
Erwin Gemmer, M.D., author of "Who Stole America's Health", tells us what
hardly any of us know about the food we eat. For example, our vegetables
are grown in demineralized soils and simply do not provide the nutrients
our body needs to keep us healthy.
Dr. Gemmer notes that in 1948 the average cup of spinach contained 158 mg of iron, but in 1965 due to modern agricultural practices that same cup of spinach contained only 27 mg. of iron. Today, you only find about 2 mg of iron per cup of spinach.
This example adequately describes our fresh food supply including to some
extent organically grown fruits and vegetables. Do you remember those
sweet tasting tomatoes your grandmother grew in the mineral rich soil of
her garden? Today, tomatoes taste very bland because of the lack of
minerals in the soil. Since fresh, raw foods represent our best source of
nutrients to keep our bodies strong and healthy you can see how it is
possible to develop nutritional deficits that lead to poor health.
The picture gets even worse. When you visit your favorite grocery and buy
all the easy to fix, prepackaged products, you are eating lots of chemicals
that may taste good, but you are not getting the right nutritional fuel for
your body.
Do you ever read the labels on the food you buy? Processed food
contains lots of chemical preservatives and food colorings that keep the
product fresh, give it an attractive appearance and enhances the taste.
But these chemicals, along with the pesticides and herbicides found on our
fruits and vegetables, damage our immune systems.
Another major factor that is responsible for diminished health in our
country is the lack of enzymes in our food according to Joel Robbins, M.
D., author of Enzymes for Health. Every metabolic function in our body and
every chemical reaction that keeps us healthy is helped by enzymes.
An enzyme is a catalyst, which makes something work more efficiently. The oil
in your automobile engine is a catalyst. Although your engine runs on g
asoline how efficient would it run without oil? So oil is an example of a
catalyst which helps reactions take place more efficiently.
Without enzymes there is no life. Enzymes run the body. Every day your
body burns enzymes to run our organs like the heart, liver, kidneys,
pancreas, right on down to the trillions of individual cells to carry on
life. Those enzymes have to be replaced as the body burns them up.
Enzymes are extremely important to maintain good health and to feel good.
Your body resupplies enzymes two ways: by manufacturing them and by
receiving an outside source from raw food (vegetables, fruits, even raw
meat) that can be converted for bodily needs.
In every, every, every instance where people aren't performing at a high
level of health or they are experiencing degenerative health conditions,
there exists an inadequate supply of enzymes to run their bodily needs.
The average family of four only spends $3.74 per week on live or raw
foods. That amounts to what one person spends on a fast-food meal at McDonalds. So a significant factor contributing to poorer health among our population is the lack of enzymes that we normally get through raw food.
When there is not enough enzymes present on a daily basis, your body begins
to cut back from various bodily functions. For instance your liver will
not be able to handle the excretion of waste effectively and less critical
functions are affected; hair may become dry, nails may crack and skin may
become dry giving the appearance of an older person.
Fifty percent of all enzymes burned by the body are used in digesting our
food. When insufficient enzymes are available for the digestion process
the body steals them from other organs. The evidence for this phenomenon
is demonstrated by the high number of indigestion aids sold in this country
or when you get sleepy after a meal, in this case your body is stealing
energy (enzymes) from other bodily functions. In fact the average person
only digests about 30 to 70% of what they eat. So most of us have
digestion problems.
Processed foods and most all packaged foods do not contain live enzymes.
When any food is heated over 112 degrees Fahrenheit, the live enzyme
activity is destroyed. The bottom line here is when we put foods that are
void of adequate nutrition and void of any enzymes into our body, we
eventually become run down.
Why? Because the destruction of live enzymes does not permit our food to be thoroughly digested. Eventually our immune system becomes weakened and we develop degenerative health conditions such as arthritis, cancer, allergies, diabetes and even juvenile health conditions like Attention Deficit Disorder and Juvenile Diabetes. Of course many people have a predisposition to develop poor health as a result of genetically passed along traits.
Many scientific studies have been conducted which support these findings,
but the American public is just unaware of them probably because the
medical and pharmaceutical industry along with the food industry would be
adversely affected.
Going back to the 1940's, a medical doctor by the name of Dr. Pottinger wanted to know how processed foods and cooked foods would affect our health. He financed his own research, so he wasn't influenced by any big business interests to come up with certain results. Dr. Pottinger studied 900 cats over a period of several generations by dividing them into five groups.
The first two groups he fed raw food and they remained healthy throughout
the experiment. The remaining three groups were fed cooked and processed
foods. The first generation of these cats developed degenerative health
conditions (arthritis, cancer, allergies, diabetes, etc.) near the end of
their life.
The second generation cats (the junk food cats) developed those same conditions during the middle of their life span. The third generation cats developed the same health conditions very early in life. An interesting side note is the cats were kept in pens with dirt floors. The cats fed raw foods had a considerable amount of live foliage growing in their pens while in the pens of the "junk food cats" nothing would grow. Do you find that interesting?
In our country today we are seeing similar results. Children are being
born with chronic degenerative diseases or are developing them much earlier
in life. This is a relatively new phenomenon in children, but nevertheless
the trend for humans is following Dr. Pottinger's experiments very closely.
In addition Dr. Pottinger found his third generation cats could not
conceive or if they did they aborted. And right now here in America, 25%
of young adults are sterile and they cannot conceive and miscarriages are
on the rise.
In Today's Health, a magazine published by the American Medical
Association, an article appeared which indicated that many researchers are
convinced that virtually all disease can be traced to missing or faulty
enzymes. So what can we do to maintain good health?
We know that you simply cannot get the complete nutritional intake necessary to maintain a healthy body from the foods we are eating now. Secondly, we need more enzymes to supplement what our body cannot manufacture and what our foods should contain, but do not have. Frankly, these critical nutritional
sources are only found in the highest quality supplements.
Since our normal food supply sources do not contain enough enzymes, we can
provide these needs with supplemental food enzymes. Remember that 50% of
the body's enzymes are used for digestion and by supplementing "food
enzymes" with each meal, we keep the enzymes our body manufactures to run
the other critical functions, thereby saving energy and maintaining a
strong immune system..
Secondly, we need a very pure, supplemental source of nutrients that are
enzymatically alive and easy to take. Most of today's health supplements
are produced in laboratories or huge manufacturing plants. These products
are man-made and unfortunately these synthetic nutrients are treated like
foreign objects in our body. Consequently, our body only absorbs 5-15% of
the nutrients such as vitamin and mineral supplements.
In fact many people are allergic to these synthetic nutrients and often have to
spend considerable energy to get them out of their system. These products may be advertised as "all natural", but the FDA in all its wisdom permits manufacturers to use that term if the products originally came from the ground. Under those circumstances my computer printer could qualify as an "all natural" product.
One of the best sources of concentrated nutrients are found in Colloidal
Mineral Formulas. Life Plus has an all-natural mineral supplement, Berry'd Treasure, which contains over 77 plant-derived minerals and is formulated in a great tasting base of berries, cherries and rainforest herbal extracts. Micro-Mins, also from Life Plus, are nature's best plant-derived colloidal minerals in capsule form. One ounce of Colloidal Minerals will give your body the equivalent of several bushel baskets of an assortment of fresh fruits and vegetables.
Wild Blue Green Algae also provides over 70 minerals in trace form, plus amino
acids and many other nutrients your body needs to stay healthy.
Furthermore, algae also contains a lot of chlorophyll which purifies the
blood and reduces cholesterol levels. Life Plus carries Super Green Algae called Rich 'n Green which is a convenient way to obtain a broad spectrum of very important phytonutrients in your diet, including a goodly supply of plant enzymes, amino acids, vitamins and minerals. They include cold processed phytonutrients obtained from numerous species of vegetables that have their origin in the Amazon Rainforest.
Rich 'n Green also contains all three high quality, concentrated super green algae, Chlorella, Spirulina and Hydra Green, as excellent sources of chlorophyll as well as other nutrients. Both barley grass and wheat grass juice concentrates are included as well as seven different herbal concentrates that are known for their content of special phytonutrients. Maitake and Reishi Musroom extracts provide phytonutrients known for support of the immune system. A high powered group of natural plant enzymes are also included that help in the digestion of these plant concentrates and other foods in the digestive tract.
Best of all Colloidal Mineral Formulas and Wild Blue Green Algae are highly
absorbable by the body. Why? Because the body likes to absorb nutrients
from organic foods, which means from plants. The typical supplements and
vitamins most people buy are inorganically produced in laboratories from
inorganic sources. Consequently, the body only absorbs about 15% of these
kinds of nutritional products. Whereas with Colloidal Minerals and Algae
the body absorbs about 97% of the nutrients, which means for every $10.00
you spend you get $9.70 worth of benefits instead of the typical 15%
absorbability factor of most supplement products.
To stay healthy and live a vigorous life really requires using very high
quality supplements to provide your body with the nutrition and enzymes you
are not getting in your food today. Even if you are already experiencing
some form of degenerative health condition you can vastly improve your
health through better nutrition.
In my work in the field of nutrition I have personally seen many cases of
people returning to a vigorous lifestyle through nutritional supplements.
And with the right type of supplements you do not have to substantially
change your lifestyle. If you are living with anything from just being
over fatigued to experiencing the worst case of arthritis, it is never too
late to start on such a program. It could literally change your life
forever.
